The National Sleep Foundation's 7 Sleep-Smart Tips for Teens

1. Sleep is food for the brain. Get enough of it, and get it when you need it. Even mild sleepiness can hurt your performance- from taking school exams to playing sports or video games. Lack of sleep can make you look tired and feel depressed, irritable, and angry.

2. Keep consistency in mind. Establish a regular bedtime and wake time schedule, and maintain it during weekends and school (or work) vacations. Don't stray from your schedule frequently and never do so for two or more consecutive nights. If you must go off schedule, avoid delaying your bedtime by more than one hour, awaken the next day within  two hours of your regular schedule, and, if you are sleepy during the day, take an early afternoon nap.

3. Learn how much sleep you need to function at your best. You should awaken refreshed, not tired. Most adolescents need between 8.5 and 9.25 hours of sleep each night.Know when you need to get up in the morning and then calculate when you need to go to sleep to get at least 8.5 hours of sleep a night.

4. Get into bright light as soon as possible in the morning, but avoid it in the evening. The light helps signal to the brain when it should wake up and when it should prepare to sleep.

5. Understand your circadian rhythm. Then, you can try to maximize your schedule throughout the day accoding to your internal clock. For example, to compensate for your "slump times" participate in stimulating activities or classes that are interactive and avoid lecture classes or potentially unsafe activities such as driving.

6. After lunch (or after noon), stay away from coffee, colas with caffeine, and nicotine, which are all stimulants. Also avoid alcohol, which disrupts sleep.

7. Relax before going to bed. Avoid heavy reading, studying, and computer games within one hour of bed. Don't fall asleep with the television on- flickering lights and stimulating content can inhibit restful sleep. If you work during the week, try to avoid working night hours. If you work until 9:30PM, for example, you will need to plan time to "chill out" before going to sleep.

8 ways to never start smoking

1. Resist  curiosity. It's natural to want to try smoking once- you're probably curious what it's like. People may tell you that it feels great, it's soothing, it's refreshing, it's a rush, or it's cool. In fact, when you take your first drag, your throat burns, your lungs feel like they're on fire, you cough, you feel sick, your eyes water, you heart rate speeds up, and you become short of air.

2. Hang out with non-smokers. It's a lot easier to resist cigarettes when the people you hang out with don't have them. If most of your friends smoke, ask them to think about quitting, and offer to help. What if your parents smoke at home? you can still choose not to start.

3. Find a friend who will support your decision not to smoke. This makes it easier for both of you to resist smoking. Make a pact with your friend not to smoke. Then stick together.

4. Avoid situations that invove smoking. Think twice before going to a party or even where you know people will be smoking. If your plans include hanging out with a group in which almost everyone smokes, change your plans. If someone who smokes asks you out, think about whether you really want to date him or her.

5. Be ready to say no. Think you the words you'll use and practice saying them. A simple "No, thanks, I dont smoke" should work fine.

6. Don't believe the media hype. Look at the ads selling cigarettes. Are those smiling, healthy faces with shining white teeth really true to life? A Malbaro Man died of lung cancer. Think of him each time you see a cigarette ad.

7. Stay busy. When you're active you don't have time to think about smoking. Join a sports team or exercise at home, get involved in after-school activities, or find hobbies you enjoy. If you're at a party where alot of people are smoking, keep your hands and mouth busy. Talk, keep a soft drink in your hand, or chew gum.

12 Tips for Making and Keeping Friends

1. Reach out. Don't always wait for someone else to make the first move. A simple hi and a smile go a long way.

2. Get involved. Join clubs that interest you. Take special classes inside or outside of school. Check out neighborhood or community organizations.

3. Let people know that you're interested about them. Don't just talk about yourself. Ask questions about them and their interests. This is a basic social skill that many people lack. It will make you seem like a brilliant conversationalist.

4. Be a good listener. Look at people while they're talking to you. Pay attention to what they say.

5. Risk telling people about yourself. When it feels right, let them in on your interests, your talents, and whats important to you. BUT...

6. Don't be a show off. Not everyone you meet will ave your interests and abilities. (On the other hand, you shouldn't have to hide them- which you won't, once you find people who like and appreciate you.

7.  Be honest. Tell the truth about yourself, what you believe in, and what you stand for. When someone asks  your opinion, be sincere. Friends appreciate honesty in each other. BUT...

8. Be kind. There are times when being tactful is more important than being honest. The truth doesn't have to hurt.

9. Don't just use your friends as sounding boards for your problems. Include them in good times too.

10. Do your share of the work. Any relationship takes effort. Don't depend on your friends to stay in touch with you, make all the plans and make all the decisions.

11. Be accepting. Not all of your friends have to think and act like you do. (Wouldn't it be boring if they did?)

12. Learn to recognize the so-called friends you can do without. Some people get so lonely that they put up with anyone, including friends that aren't really friends at all.

everyone seemed to like  the idea from last time so i think i'll do it again :)|
it also takes less time!

5 reasons why mistakes are great:

1. Mistakes are universal. Everyone makes them, from preschoolers to presidents. They give you something in common with the rest of the people on the planet.
2. Mistakes show that you're learning. Whether you incorrectly apply a geometry theorem or say something foolish in front of someone you're trying to impress, a mistake is a point of information that inspires you to do better next time you're in a similar situation.
3. Mistakes show that you're trying something new or different. It's rare that you (or anyone else) will accomplish something perfectly on your first attempt. If you had spent your whole life doing only those things you could master on your first try you'd never have learned to walk, read, or ride a bike.
4. Mistakes allow you to see your own improvements. If you had videotaped your first attempt at the backstroke, then videotaped yourself after three months of swimming lessons, you'd notice a significant change for the better.
5. Mistakes allow you to learn from others. Asking for help isn't the same as admitting you've failed.

7 Resiliencies that all teens need:

1. INSIGHT is the habit of asking tough questions- about yourself and about the situations you find yourself in- and giving honest answers. Insight  helps you see things as they really are, not as you wish they were.

2. INDEPENDENCE means being your own person. Sometimes that means stepping back from the pressure you feel from people and situations. Independence helps keep you focused on what you want out of life.

3. RELATIONSHIPS are connections with people who matter. Relationships provide a sense of belonging, opportunities to express yourself, and support when you need it.

4. INITIATIVE means facing life's challenges head-on. When you take initiative, you begin a positive cycle of solving problems, overcoming fears, and being a winner. Initiative puts you in charge.

5. CREATIVITY means using your imagination as a safe haven - a place where you're free to express yourself and rearrange the details of your life as you please. Creativity can help you channel overwhelming feelings and make them manageable.

6. HUMOR allows you to find what's funny, even when you're sad or in pain. It's a wonderful way to release tension and to relieve pain or embarrassment.

7. MORALITY means doing the right thing, even if it's not the easy or natural thing. It helps you connect to other people through being useful and careful. It helps you feel like you're a good person.

16 Safe Ways to Stay Awake

1. Do sit-ups or jumping jacks,  leg lifts or hand squeezes. Run in place. Take a brisk walk. Shake. Exercise gets your heart pumping and moves oxygen-rich blood through your circulatory system.

2. Rub your hands, arms, legs, and face- more ways to stimulate circulation.

3. Eat something crunchy. Try cheese and crackers, an apple, sunflower seeds, or celery sticks with peanut butter. Avoid sugary snacks. They'll give you a brief energy burst, followed by an ugly sugar crash.

4. Drink lots of water or juice.

5. Meditate. Find a comfortable place to sit; keep your spine straight; stare at a spot on the wall, or close  your eyes; breathe slowly, deeply, and rhythmically; and think about the same syllable, word, or short phrase over and over again. About ten minutes should clear your head.

6. Listen to stimulating music, prefferably without lyrics.. Working to music may improve your concentration by blocking out other noises.

7.  Turn up the lights, or turn on another light. Brighter is better when you're feeling sleepy.

8. Take a 15-minute break. Call a friend and talk. Play a video game. Surf the Web. Whatever.

9. Think wide-awake thoughts. Instead of "I'm so sleepy... I can't stand it... I'm so bored... I have to sleep." try "I won't give in. I will stay awake. I'm going to stay awake. I'm awake!"

10.Read aloud from what you're writing or studying.

11. Chew gum. Blow bubbles.

12. Take a cold shower or dip in a pool.

13. Open a window, especially if its cool outside.

14. Put ice cubes in your pants.

15. Drink a liter of carbonated water, then belch the alphabet.

16. If you simply can't keep your eyes open, set your alarm for half-hour or an hour and take a nap. Even a brief snooze will recharge your brain and body.
